Drosera spatulata, commonly known as a the Spoon-Leaved Sundew, is one of the largest groups of sundews found in nature. Native to many regions around the world, this carnivorous plant is highly adaptable and a favorite among collectors. It’s often recognized for its self-seeding behavior, sometimes becoming a “weed” in Drosera collections, but this trait also makes it easy to grow and share with friends or family.
This sundew forms cute clusters of rounded leaves covered in glimmering, sticky tentacles that attract and trap tiny insects. Like other carnivorous plants, it grows best in nutrient-poor soils and obtains nutrition primarily from prey. A balanced mix of sphagnum moss with perlite or sand provides the ideal blend of aeration and moisture retention. Along with mostly moist conditions, Drosera prefer water that is low in minerals and salts like rain or RO water. These plants add beautiful color and texture to terrariums and appreciate bright light that isn’t too direct. Easy to grow and quick to flower, this sundew is a wonderful beginner-friendly introduction to carnivorous plants!
